Solid Violets

 

Creating Solid Violets

 

There have been a number of inquiries regarding how to breed Solid or "Wrap-around" Violets in which the bellies are also violet coloured.

Violets, like Sapphires, are recessives and have white bellies. However, both Charcoals [in the homozygous state] and Ebonies are characterized by belly colouration. Therefore, due to the interaction between the Violet and either Charcoal or Ebony traits, it is quite possible to produce Violets with coloured bellies.

A "Wrap-around" or Solid Violet could be either a "homo Violet homo Charcoal" [v-v + c-c] or a "homo Violet hetero Ebony" [v-v + e-g] . However, a "homo Violet homo Ebony" [v-v + e-e] won't work because the "homo Ebony" component would be too dark and mask the Violet component. Since Charcoal is now relatively rare, most would use Ebony to create the "Wrap-around" or Solid Violet.

To produce kits with either of the above two Solid Violet colourations, the parents must possess the following genetic states:

 

Ebony-based Solid Violets

 

In comparison to Charcoal-based Solid Violets, Ebony-based Solid Violets are potentially more variable in shading due to the cumulative recessive nature of the Ebony trait in the heterozygous state. Specifically, the Ebony trait in the heterozygous state will demonstrate progressive darkening through successive generations of hetero Ebony to hetero Ebony mating. This will naturally affect the intensity of the violet colouration in corresponding Ebony-based Solid Violets.

Charcoal-based Solid Violets

 

In comparison to Ebony-based Solid Violets, Charcoal-based Solid Violets will be more consistent in shading. However, since Charcoal is now quite rare, it is unlikely that many Charcoal-based Solid Violets exist or will be bred.
